Oscars 2010: The Winners
Posted: March 9, 2010 Filed under: Awards Leave a comment »So, the awards season is over and The Hurt Locker has been the biggest surprise scooping a further six accolades including Best Picture and Director at this years Oscars. Kathryn Bigelow, director for the Iraq war film The Hurt Locker, became the first woman to win the best directing Oscar beating ex-husband James Cameron, whose masterpeice Avatar was hotly tipped to sweep the Oscars.
The Hurt Locker director, Kathryn Bigelow
Sandra Bullock took home the Best Actress award for her role in upcoming film The Blind Side, just a day after winning the Razzie for worst actress, with vetran actor Jeff Bridges finally getting the recognition he deserves by taking the Best Actor Oscar home for his portrayal of a washed-up country singer in Crazy Heart. Christoph Waltz, won yet another Supporting actor award for his role as a Nazi Officer in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds with Mo’Nique taking the female award for Precious.
So, what have we learnt from this seasons awards? First box office winners doesn’t equal awards. The Hurt Locker only took £9.9million whereas Avatar took £1.32billion. The Hurt Locker won six Oscars, three Golden Globes and six actors. Avatar won three Oscars, two Baftas and two Golden Globes.
Second, I am rubbish at predicting winners!

Baftas 2010: The winners and losers
Posted: February 23, 2010 Filed under: Awards 2 Comments »The cream of the movie industry descended on London this week as the annual Bafta awards took place at Covent Garden. But who were the real winners and losers on the night?
Winners
The Hurt Locker
Kathryn Bigelows The Hurt Locker exceeded many peoples expectations, including mine to win a total of six Baftas including the coveted Best film beating the likes of my tip Avatar. The film about an army bomb squad in Iraq is now a hot favourite to triumph at the Oscars later this month.
Awards- Best Film, Director (Kathryn Bigelow), Original Screenplay (Mark Boal), Cinematography, Editing, Sound
Colin Firth
In many peoples eyes, Colin Firth will ALWAYS be remembered for him role as Mr Darcy, however Sunday was his night, with much of the talk the next day being on his acceptance speech. When collecting his Bafta for his role in A Single Man, Firth humourously told the audience how he was seconds away from sending an email turning down the role, only for a fridge repairer to halt his plans. After years of being Mr Darcy, Colin has now broken out of his stereotype and is one of the leading men in Hollywood after beating the likes of Jeff Bridges and George Clooney to the title of Best Actor.
Awards- Best Actor (A Single Man)

Losers
Avatar
James Camerons epic journey to Pandora reportedly cost $237 million to create but soon after release became the highest grossing film of all time surpassing Camerons previous film Titanic. Despite critics and public alike declaring Avatar to be the “best film ever made” the Bafta panel did not see it the same way and on the night Avatar only won two award out of the eight nominations. The biggest shock of the night came when the masterpeice was beaten to the Best Film by The Hurt Locker. Can the film do better at the Oscars?
Awards- Production Design, Visual Effects
Jonathon Ross
Sadly for him, this could be the last year Wossy hosts the award after announcing his plans to leave the BBC who broadcast the show. Despite his best efforts, Covent Garden failed to see the funny side to his jokes. It was actually painful to watch. At least Dizzee Rascal didn’t style him for the night! James Corden has already put himself forward for the job. Can he do a better job than Jonathon?
